This evening during dinner, Song randomly asks:
“Ba, who took care of you when you were a little boy?”
This simple question cause my heart to seize up and I was momentarily without speech. It took several moments for me to come up with an answer. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remembered to keep it simple and to not provide more information than is needed to answer the question. Even so, I continue to feel that my answer was less than satisfactory.
Song, there are a number of kids out there who have to watch out for themselves. I was one of those kids.
Song: But who watched out for you when you were a little baby?
Me: Some nurses and other grown-ups. Do you remember the story
Song: Yes. So you were adopted.
And that’s where this conversation ends for now.
I foresee so many more of these types of questions in my future and on many levels dread not having the answers. I also know that it’s ok to not have the answers and want to teach this lesson in the best way that I can. Sometimes the answer is asking the question and seeing what comes back.
Any thoughts from my fellow adoptees on these types of questions would be much appreciated.
