Coming back from the past

The stories we tell ourselves during moments of restless agitation are the ones that are sometimes hardest to believe. The concepts that we believe to be true are sometimes the hardest to explain. How we came to understand right from wrong, up from down, sighted from blind, linear vs logarithmic, etc. With this confusing preface of perhaps nonsensical thought, I want to share from a past memory, the words of a wise old friend from Vietnam.

Only a certain number of people exist in the world. It's a fairly small number, but they keep coming back in different forms. Based on how we decide to live hour lives, it will be determined how we shall return to the world. If you live a really bad life, you could come back as an ant, so remember this when you disobey your elders. Try to remember, "When eating a fruit, think of the person who planted the tree."

My thinking is that you must have done something bad in another life to be blind and orphaned now. You can take the life you have now and come back as something better. Maybe be born in to a family. You never know, we could meet again somewhere and both have working eyes. You'll be the wise old man telling the story and I'll be the child playing near by. Someone once told me, "He that has a tongue in his head may find his way anywhere."

So remember these stories I tell you, mind your elders, and remember the importance and power of words.

The power of these echoing words have stayed with me since that sunny day long ago.
